November Empties!

NovEmpty1

This month has flown by for me, despite being full of rain, more rain only heavier, below freezing temperatures and even some snow, which is thankfully rare in Vancouver. I don’t like being so busy that I can’t post, and it’s been far too long. Long enough to have lots of empties! Plus one item that is not used up but was so bad it needs to go!

NovEmpty2

November Empties!

Numbered clockwise starting on the left.

1) Yves Rocher Yellow Peach Shower Gel

This was a pretty standard liquid soap/shower gel with a peachy fragrance. The peach scent was fresh and not overly ripe, but a little powdery which bothered me enough to not want to repurchase. The bottle was a generous 400ml/13.4 oz.

2) Aussie You Can Shine Hairspray

This was decent enough hairspray, it did it’s job. Had a nice citrusy fruity smell. I didn’t notice any stickiness or crispness. I would repurchase this if I found it on sale, which is how I found this can!

3) Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti Frizz Serum

Although most silicone serums for frizzy hair are mostly the same, this is one of my favourites. It has a nice fruity scent standard for any Fructis product, and has a thinner, easier to spread consistency which helps when you have super long, super fine hair like mine. The pump is also a winner. This is my second or third bottle of this and I will continue to rebuy until I can’t find it anymore!

4) Avon Moisture Therapy Calming Relief Creamy Body Wash

Although I would also recommend this for a body wash, I use it on my face! It removes makeup really well, does not irritate, and doesn’t leave any residue. If you have really dry skin I wouldn’t recommend use on your face but it does a great job on my oily skin! Contains oatmeal to soothe dry, tight, itchy skin. Been through many tubes of this!

5) Smashbox Full Exposure Eyeshadow Sampler

Now this one isn’t so much empty as it is impossible to use. The little patches of eye shadow sample were so dry and stuck on that application was impossible. I made the mistake of trying to make this work on a work day and had to scrap it mid way through. I’m sure the actual product is easier to use than this sample, but this sample has made me never want to try the real thing it was so bad. Complete failure in execution. Below is a picture of the tiny amount I managed to scrape off the card.

Smashbox Full Exposure Eye Shadow Sample

Smashbox Full Exposure Eye Shadow Sample

6) Neutrogena Acne Stress Control – 3 in 1 Hydrating Acne Treatment

I wouldn’t really call this hydrating so much as it is smoothing, and I can’t even comment on the stress control claim! The silicone base makes your skin feel soft and smooth, while being at the right ph level for the salicylic acid to do it’s work. If I stop using this for a few days, I can feel and see the negative effect in my skin, getting flakier with more clogged pores. I will buy this as long as I can find it in Canada, as there is no other affordable, gentle, effective salicylic acid leave on treatment option that I am aware of in the country. Clean & Clear has a version of something similar which is only available in the US, and everything else I can find here has alcohol and other irritants in it.

7) NYC Color in a New York Minute – Grand Central Station

How often is it you finish a bottle of nail polish before it goes all weird on you? This isn’t my first finished bottle of the fast drying NYC clear coat, and certainly not my last. I will buy this as long as I can still find it in Canada. Currently I have to purchase it online to find it at all! Fantastic product. Did a full review here.

8) Revlon Lip Butter in Peach Parfait

I usually reach for pinks and reds, but somehow this peachy lip butter with tiny golden flecks has managed to work itself in many daily looks! It complements both warm and cooler eye looks and doesn;t look garish under fluorescent lighting. It has well earned it’s place as a daily favourite. Will I buy again? Absolutely, just waiting for a sale! The are otherwise around $10 in Canada.

9) L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara – Black

It may have been in blackest black or carbon black, I don’t remember, but it was, and is, a great mascara! This is the closest in formulation and brush as my long discontinued in Canada old favourite Full n’ Soft Mascara. It doesn’t clump too much, it holds a curl better than some, doesn’t flake (until you get to the end of the lifespan of the tube) and is perfectly waterproof without being too much of a pain to wash off. I will continue buying this when found on sale as long as it’s being made!

Hope everyone had a good November and you’re staying warm! Or cool if you’re one of my Aussie readers!

Revlon Cherries in the Snow Swatch & Review!

Revlon_Cherries_In_The_Snow_rosesHi! This past weekend I assisted catering a function to help out a family member. One of the perks of this type of work is that I get to go home with some sort of goodies when it’s all over, and in this case I got to take home these gorgeous roses! It’s not often I have flowers or even much plant life in my home as I’m always worried the kitty will nibble them but she’s ignored these ones so far. They still look great actually even after 5 days, they are on my desk just starting to open! Funny how the vase dwarfs the lipstick in that header photo!

I was especially glad to have got to take these home as I spent the whole event looking at them, thinking the colour reminded me of something. A very particular lipstick, and old favourite, and I just had to know if I was imagining it, or if I was in fact thinking of the right thing. Take a look for yourself!

Pretty spot on right? Revlon Cherries in the Snow Super Lustrous Creme Lipstick has been around at least since the 50’s, from what I can find, which tells you something about it’s popularity and lasting power as an iconic lip shade. The formula is even and smooth, and it lasts on my lips reasonably well providing I don’t eat anything. The shade brightens up my pale skin making everything looks more vibrant, but I can see this looking equally as striking on a darker skin tone as well. Cherries in the Snow is a clearly blue/cool based raspberry pink-red with no hint of shimmer. You can dab on a bit for a fuchsia stain, or apply full on for a look with the impact of a red but the flattering femininity of a pink! I’m often too scared to wear a full on red lipstick (although I can recommend several red lip butters also from Revlon here for a softer look) but this one seems more manageable. It somehow makes my eyes look bluer, and my skin look clearer. I must have a few dozen lipsticks but this is by far my favourite. Maybe not the most wearable, definitely not an every day thing, but still a clear favourite. No wonder it’s persisted since the 50’s! I’d imagine it would have had a resurgence of popularity in the 80’s as well. I hope they never discontinue this “vintage” shade!

Here are some swatches in sun and with flash.

It’s worth noting that this lip shade isn’t actually available in Canada. I had to order mine from what I though was a US eBay vendor, which then in turn shipped from Germany! I’m not sure why, but I don’t mind, the product was perfect. Glad I ordered 2 with all that trouble. I did try sending Revlon a letter to inquire as to why we don’t have it in Canada, and they sent me a form letter about how products get discontinued (which it isn’t, it’s been in constant production in the US, so I guess no one really read my question.)

Also worth noting is that the nail shade incarnation of Revlon Cherries in the Snow IS available in Canada. I’ve seen it, although not recently, and if I see it again I will snap it up as the colour does match the lip shade perfectly. I hope they didn’t discontinue that!

Incidentally, I couldn’t find out the name of the shade of the roses themselves. I was told it’s usually on the label that come with them, but we looked, and nothing. If anyone knows, please share as I would love to know!

I want to round this post out with a couple of old ads for this same lipstick!

The Reds of Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters – Comparison Swatch & Review!

Revlon Lip Butter Reds

Revlon Lip Butter Reds

Monstrously picture heavy post! If you aren’t quite brave enough for a full on bold red lip but are curious because they look so great on everyone else (like I was) these Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters are a fantastic place to start due to the sheerer, moisturizing formulas. Consider them as training wheels for red lips! I didn’t get all of these at the same time so they are in varying states of use, but all are worth taking a look at. There are 4 Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters that are on the red side that I have selected for review today. Although some may look similar in their tubes, you will see the end result is quite different when swatched.

Starting with the “warmest” of the four is Candy Apple 035. Candy Apple is a glitter free ever so slightly orange leaning red which applies sheerly and smoothly but can build up to a very luminescent brighter red. This is the closest to a true red that I can find in Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters and is the most wearable true red shade that I own. Very flattering and still forgiving due to the sheerness.

Next we have the much more cool toned Cherry Tart 070. Cherry Tart is definitely more of a berry red, and more pigmented than it’s counterparts. Clearly blue in undertone and full of shimmery silver and red micro glitter, it has a nice depth and intensity while still being sheer. It will build to an almost fuchsia deeper berry tone. I don’t think many of these Lip Butters have glitter, the only other one that comes to mind is Peach Parfait (also pretty). I think this might be my favourite!

I think Wild Watermelon 063 is a more recent addition to the Lip Butter lineup. It is a sparkle free brightened warm pinkish red. I think they tweaked the formula with this one. It feels slightly drier (but by no means drying) and applies more smoothly and evenly than the others. This one is the most fun, perky and easy going of these 4.

And finally Red Velvet 040. I lied, I think this one might be my favourite! This was my first red Lip Butter purchase which sold me on the rest. Red Velvet is a somewhat plummy deeper, darker red, a bit mysterious, vampy and broody. No glitter. It reminds me of stains from black cherry juice. It looks great with pale skin and blue eyes but I’d imagine it would look just as nice on someone darker as well. Gorgeous shade.

Overall these are worth a try if you still haven’t! Each Lip Butter has a weartime somewhat better than your standard lip gloss, but not quite the wear or intensity of a lipstick. All are pretty moisturizing. I need something on my lips at all times and never feel too dry with these. They retail for around $8-9 Canadian but I grab them when on for $3.99 or a BOGO sale.

Elf Liquid Eyeliner Swatch & Review!

elf liquid eyeliner

elf liquid eyeliner

I found this unassuming little treat at a new local dollar store for all of $1.50. It was hidden way up high in a wall crammed full of miscellaneous beauty accoutrements, trying hard not to be seen. Elf (eyes lips face) cosmetics are another one of those things that I have a hard time obtaining locally, so I was pretty eager to try this out, especially at that price. I tried it out today with a very simple eye look for a test run to see how it would hold up, as I’ve found mixed reviews online.

The bottle itself is a pretty standard liquid eyeliner container in that it has a tapered wand with a wider base. The brush is thin with fine hairs, and is not a felt tip. This might prove a little more tricky to handle for someone new to liquid eyeliner but others should have little trouble with it.

I noticed the back of the package carding noted “smudge-proof liquid liner” twice. Perhaps a printing error is what landed this batch in the dollar store as liquidated salvage stock? It also noted on the card that elf is a charity supporter (didn’t mention which) and that they do not test on animals.

elf_liquid_eyeliner_back

The product applied smoothly, was fluid enough to spread easily but not so liquid as it got everywhere. It dried reasonably quickly for me but I only used a thin coat. The colour was a deep black and dried to a semi matte finish. Just barely shiny enough to not look flat. Definitely not glossy. Below are single swipes on my arm, one with a light hand, one heavier.

I applied this product with a simple eye look for a trial run for the purpose of this review. I made sure to pick a few favourites that I already knew would perform well so I could give the elf eyeliner a fair shake. Products used:

-Wet n Wild eyeshadow single in Brulee on browbone

-Maybelline  Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe in crease

-NYC City Curls mascara in Extreme Black (a lovely, velvety plush finish that wears well, all for less than $3 so of course it’s suddenly not available here anymore >.<)

-Revlon Satin eyeshadow in Nude Slip on lid (a beautiful shimmery peachy neutral with a gorgeous, buttery texture, so of course it’s discontinued and in my Holy Grail Graveyard)

-Rimmel Stay Matte foundation in a small foil sample pack I received in a magazine. I’m a little on the fence with this one. I like the texture but I am unsure about the finish, coverage, and wear time.

Other products used

I’ve been wearing this a few hours now, no smears, smudges or flakes. I have oily eyelids and wasn’t expecting it to perform this well! After it was well set, I ran the swatches on my arm under water, and it didn’t move. There was still residue after using soap, but it removed easily with a makeup remover wipe. I will update if things go south with this eyeliner before the end of the day! EDIT: My Color Tattoo eyeshadow faded before this eyeliner, which was still going strong somewhere past the 12 hour mark. I am pretty damn impressed!

Final verdict? LOVE IT. It is well worth the crazy low buck fifty. I plan on buying the rest of the stock – if there’s any left – as it seems everything I like is discontinued or impossible to find immediately after I declare my undying love. Why do I keep scaring these great products away! *dramatic sigh*

I also wanted to share this card that came in a recent ebay purchase with you 🙂

Revlon Coralberry Super Lustrous Lipstick Swatch & Review!

Revlon Coralberry

Revlon Coralberry

Apparently Spring Fashion Week 2014 had an orange lipstick trend, meanwhile I’ve been searching for a suitable for day wear coral toned lipstick that isn’t so orange that I can’t wear it! Warm orange tones just do not work with my cooler toned skin. I think I have found a good balance between a peachy orange and a pink in Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Coralberry 674.

Revlon Coralberry

Revlon Coralberry

Packaging is basic black with a brass ring with the Revlon logo. The top is see through, allowing you to see the shade right through the tube, which I appreciate. The label on the bottom is a reasonably close match to the colour of the product which is also handy.

Revlon Coralberry

Revlon Coralberry

I believe this shade has been around for years, Revlon is pretty good about not discontinuing their lipsticks (unlike their other products – I’m looking at you recently, secretly reformulated for the worse Revlon Colorstay foundation!). Coralberry is a creamy, smooth applying creme formula lipstick. The colour is a warm leaning pinky coral with barely perceptible tiny golden micro glitter which I don’t see in the end result on my lips. This shade remains just the slightest bit sheer, as shown in the swatch. It also tends to emphasize lip flakes so if you have drier lips I’d recommend an exfoliation and a balm on a day you want to wear this. Revlon Coralberry lasts a few hours on my lips and is fairly moisturizing.

Well, even if someone thinks it’s still too orange for me, I can always tell them I’m just on trend for Spring! 🙂

Revlon ColorStay in Bold Sangria, Swatches & Dupe Info!

Revlon Bold Sangria

Revlon Bold Sangria

Far and away my favourite nail polish formula is Revlon’s ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel, in it’s current and even former incarnations. Been waiting for a sale (half price woohoo!) to finally grab the one I am reviewing today, Revlon Bold Sangria! I’ve gone on before about how I prefer my nail colours to be of the deeper, darker, moody and broody variety and this one manages to be all these things while remaining elegant and feminine.

Revlon Bold Sangria is a deep, dark purpley plum. I love this contrast against my pale skin (NC20/25 for reference). The formula is smooth, takes 2 coats for an even finish, and didn’t seem to take too long to dry to me. The brush is of the wider, flatter variety which I do prefer for my nails. The bottle is the standard simple, utilitarian and tidy round bottle and brush handle.

Here it is on my nails in shade from sun!

Now when I looked up this product, I was made aware that Revlon Bold Sangria has been said to be a dupe for OPI Siberian Nights. I don’t have this one to compare, but online the pictures do look mighty close to me, so if you are looking for a less expensive or more available (in some areas) drugstore dupe, this one appears to make the cut. If you are looking for an even thriftier drugstore option, might I recommend NYC Color In A Minute in Battery Park Purple! I completely forgot I had this one, and want to show you how similar they are!

Close right? Those colours are pretty well dead on to my eye. Of course there will be a difference in formula, the NYC ones do in fact dry very quickly, which I love for a super speedy manicure that will last a day or two, but for longer lasting more reliable wear, the Colorstay is the way to go. NYC polishes retail for about $2-3 tops.

Revlon ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel retails for around $10 Canadian, contain 0.4Oz/11.7mLs, and are big 3 free.

L’Oreal Greycian Goddess, Revlon Calla Lily, Feather Nail Manicure!

Revlon Greycian Goddess, Calla Lily

L’Oreal Greycian Goddess, Calla Lily

I was trapped in the house all day today as I had to be present for the landlord and his perpetual renovation attempts (it’s not going well). I needed something to busy myself that I wouldn’t mind being constantly interrupted from, so I took the opportunity to try out a manicure I’ve been meaning to for a while.

L'Oreal Greycian Goddess, Revlon Calla Lily

L’Oreal Greycian Goddess, Revlon Calla Lily

Products used:

L’Oreal Nail Color in Greycian Goddess 560 (not currently on their Canadian website, possibly discontinued). I received this polish with a lipstick free as some sort of promotion from a Well.ca ages ago. A medium intensity blue leaning grey shade. The creme formula is smooth, covers well in 2 coats and dries reasonably quickly. I love grey nail polishes.

Revlon ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel in Calla Lily. Definitely discontinued. Snatched it up for $1 at my local Dollarama! This shade is beautiful. It is a very sheer milky translucent glitter that is clear enough to use as a top coat. Has lovely gold and pink micro glitter.

Revlon ColorStay clear topcoat. Still available at mass retailers.

L'oreal Greycian Goddess, Feather

L’oreal Greycian Goddess, Feather

For the feather, I painted on 2 thin coats of L’Oreal Greycian Goddess and applied a feather previously cut to size and gently tapped it down while the polish was still tacky. Applied top coat. That’s it. Far easier than anticipated, I cant wait to try it again!

When I was done painting the rest of the nails grey, I decided it needed more (I didn’t have enough feathers for all nails) so I decided to slap on the Revlon Calla Lily. Overall I’m liking the effect!

Revlon Brilliant Strength Nail Enamel in Enthrall 100 Swatch and Review!

Revlon Enthrall Brilliant Strength

Revlon Enthrall Brilliant Strength

I hadn’t yet tried this formula from Revlon, and when I saw this really unique shade at half price (probably discontinued) I happily snapped it up and I’m glad I did! I have nothing like it in my collection. I tend to favour non uber feminine nail polish shades. I like them dark, moody, broody, dramatic. It’s just nail polish, if you don’t like it you can just take it off. And if someone else doesn’t like it, who cares. It’s nail polish. If a person has their knickers in a twist over someone else’s nail polish they need to get their priorities sorted.

Which brings me to this gem! Revlon Brilliant Strength Nail Enamel in Enthrall (numbered as 100) is a gorgeous, super unique deep murky olive green/brown with matching golden green shimmer. It looks greener under the flash and browner in regular light. It makes me think of forests, lush flourishing marshlands and crocodiles. A fancy, sparkley, dapper crocodile but a crocodile nonetheless. I love this!

Revlon Enthrall

Revlon Enthrall

Revlon Enthrall

Revlon Enthrall

The formula is smooth, and went on smoothly with full coverage at 2 coats. The brush is the wider, flatter style which I love as it works wonderfully with my nail shape for easy application. This seemed to dry very quickly for me. It is formaldehyde, toluene and DBP free. Odd enough to be worth mentioning, this formula had a slight woody scent to it which may or may not have something to do with being big 3 free. I’ve had it on for a full day, have washed dishes, no chips yet. Mine usually chip pretty quickly so this is good news.

Glad to have tried this newer formula from Revlon, and will gladly pick up more if they are all this good!
